Getting Around Koh Samui Safely
May 20, 2026 · 7 min read
Taxis, ride apps, songthaews and private drivers — how to move around the island calmly and safely, and what to know before you ride.
Koh Samui is bigger than it looks, and getting around is part of the experience. Here is how to move calmly and safely — whether you ride yourself or leave the driving to someone else.
Your options
- Ride apps (Grab, Bolt) — fixed, transparent prices; best in the busier areas
- Metered or agreed-fare taxis — always agree the price before you set off
- Songthaews — shared pick-up trucks running set routes, cheap and fun for short hops
- Private driver — the easiest way to do a full day of sights, arranged through your concierge
Road safety first
The island’s roads mix fast cars, scooters and the occasional stray dog. Roads can be steep and slippery after rain, and lane discipline is relaxed. Whether you walk, ride or are driven, expect the unexpected and never rush.
Simple rules that keep you safe
- Never travel in an open vehicle without holding on; keep children seated and supervised
- Avoid quiet, unlit roads late at night
- Agree taxi fares in advance, or use an app with a fixed price
- Keep your villa address and concierge number saved offline
