Where should you stay on Koh Samui?
For most travellers, the answer is the north coast — Maenam and Bophut. It is 15–20 minutes from the airport, has the island’s calmest beaches and best cafés, and goes quiet at night. Chaweng and Lamai in the east have the nightlife and the crowds; the south and west are remote and beautiful but far from everything. We live and host in the north — that is our honest bias, and this guide explains it.

The island in four corners
North — Maenam & Bophut
Calm beaches, Fisherman’s Village, cafés and slow evenings. Best for families, long stays and anyone who came to rest. Our villas are here.
East — Chaweng & Lamai
The party strip, malls and airport proximity. Fun for a night out; loud for a whole stay.
South — Lipa Noi & Taling Ngam
Wide empty beaches and sunset views; peaceful, but a drive from restaurants and shops.
The interior
Jungle, waterfalls and viewpoints — where you go on a scooter day, not where you sleep.
When to come
Seasons, honestly
December to March is the prime season: dry, sunny and busiest. April to September stays warm with short showers — great value, greener island. October and November bring the monsoon: dramatic skies, real rain, the lowest prices.
The sea is warm all year. If you can choose, come late December to March; if you want the island quieter and cheaper, May and June are the sleeper picks.
First-timer basics
What to know before you land
- The airport (USM) is small and pleasant — you can be at a north-coast villa 20 minutes after baggage
- Rent a scooter only if you already ride; otherwise a small car or drivers arranged per trip
- Cash still matters at markets; cards work everywhere else
- The island runs on early evenings — the best dinners start at six, with sunset
- Respect temple dress codes: covered shoulders and knees
- Book accommodation early for December–March; the good places go first

For a short stay, arranged drivers are easiest; for longer stays a scooter or small car opens the island up — we arrange both.
